What a great question!
Many years ago, when my wife Kristi and I were broke college kids, we got our break when we managed to sell a small lawn care company I started to work myself through college.
We took every penny we had to our name (which wasn't many!), used a FHA loan, and put 3.5% down on an UGLY duplex here in Tallahassee.
That 2 bedroom, 1 bath, little duplex immediately changed our lives. Not only would we eventually sell it for more than double what we bought it for, but we immediately lowered our housing expense when we stopped paying someone else rent and started collecting it ourselves. Oh, did I mention that we also leveraged the equity at one point to buy another duplex and even a business?
....needless to say, I was HOOKED.
I had one problem, though. I couldn't find one single property management company who I genuinely felt would treat my rental properties in the same way I would treat them. Not ONE.
So, we set off on a journey that would lead us to start our own Brokerage and property management company. One that would manage other's properties in the same way that we'd manage our own. One that would invest in and build up people in our community and one that would strive to do the right thing; even if it was against our own best interest.
